Fiber Optic Modem - FOM-40

The FOM-40 is a high speed, synchronous fiber optic modem operating full or half duplex over fiber optic cable. It has selectable data rates from 56 kbps up to 1.544 Mbps (T1) and 2.048 Mbps (E1), and a range up to 100 km (62 miles) using single mode 1550 nm laser diode. The FOM-40 can operate over single mode or multimode fiber using 850 nm or 1310 nm LEDs, 1310 nm laser diode or 1550 nm laser diode.

The large variety of interfaces supported by the FOM-40 facilitate the connection of distant routers to data services. The Ethernet/Fast Ethernet bridge modules enable the connection of remote LANs and VLANs. The FOM-40 extends these services and connections over fiber optic cables and performs hand-off to the SDH/SONET or IP cloud.

The FOM-40 features V.54 diagnostics to perform local analog/digital and remote digital loopbacks. Loopback commands are controlled either by a front panel manual switch or via the DTE interface signals. A front panel switch generates an internal pseudo-random test pattern (511) according to the V.52 standard, for testing end-to-end connectivity.

  • Using 1550nm laser diode cable the FOM-40 has a maximum range of 68 miles.
  • It runs at twelve selectable synchronous data rates from 56 kbps up to 2048 kbps.
  • The FOM-40 can operate over single mode or multimode fiber using 850nm LEDs, 1300 nm laser diode or 1550 nm laser diode.
  • Available with a wide array of DTE interfaces including V.24/RS-232, V.35, X.21, RS-530, V.36 (RS-449), G.703 co-directional 64k and Ethernet.
  • For point-to-multipoint applications it is available in a card version with a managed rack.
  • Three clocking modes for maximum flexibility
  • V.54 diagnostics for local, digital and remote digital loopbacks
